‘Being part of a system requires knowing that whatever happens is an expression of the patterns that entire system is involved in - that means there is no fault, and everyone is responsible. No blame.’ ( Nora Bateson: Small Arcs of Larger Circles)

‘The ecological body is aware of the effect that its movement is having on others and on the environment itself, and how they, in turn are conditioning its movement. The ecological body lives within movement itself and as a system dancing within systems, rather than as an isolated unit.’ (Sandra Reeve: Dance Somatics and Spiritualities)

Nora Bateson
Movement and Ideas as Lived Experience
Date: 16th-17th March 2019
Location: Wootton Fitzpaine, West Dorset

  • A workshop with Nora Bateson & Sandra Reeve
  •
  • When I first read Nora Bateson’s work, I felt a resonance between her approach to life and my approach to movement – for example, we share an interest in mutual learning, co-creation, calibration and adaptation, curiosity, complexity and the vital importance of context in any situation.

  • Nora’s approach can be seen in two terms that she has coined and works with: ‘symmathesy’ and ‘warm data’.

  • Symmathesy describes the contextual, mutual learning through interaction that happens all the time, everywhere – for example in a body, in a family or in a forest. [Or where someone is moving attentively with others in a particular environment.]

  • Warm data is information about the interrelational processes occurring between and among multiple systems in multiple contexts. [Or the kind of information that we are gathering as we move, in order to understand our environment and one another, stay upright and express ourselves – and the kind of information that the environment is gathering about us.]

This weekend will be a co-creation between us, exploring as a group how we can transform our attitudes through movement, take responsibility for our place and position within the systems that surround us and become more aware of our impact in the environment and how it impacts us.  These are skills which are vital for informed citizenship in our world.
