Joyful's poem
The garden remembers
A mature weeping willow
The Princess in the centre of the garden
Is chopped down
A boy plays horsey on the logs
The elegant tall duchess
The sliver birch down in a gale
Leans precariously like a drunk
Against the cherry tree
An archery target and net
Arrows zip through the air
Past the net
And into the wooden fence”
Raucous games of cricket
A stray ball
Shatters the kitchen window
Oh Oh
Teenage Boys
Surf the top of the tall cypress hedge
Around the perimeter of the garden
When Mum is not looking!
One September day
A woman in labour lies in the sun
Breathing through her contractions
The baby is born that night in the bedroom
A long table
Laden with food
Celebrates a graduation
And a departure for the USA
It’s a twenty first birthday party
A marquee takes off in a gust of wind
And lands in the hedge
Remember to tether marquees!
Two six-foot men in pink leotards
Burst out of the lounge to “The Chariots of Fire
Do cartwheels, handstands and forward rolls
To celebrate their sister’s thirtieth birthday
How exciting
A fire blowing display
That turns into a nightmare
When the flames blow back and burn their father’s face
A quick thinking friend
Douses the flames
With his pint of beer
Saving the man’s face from scaring
A daughter grieves for her mother
Who is dying in the lounge
A weeping cherry
Now commemorates her ashes
Marriage vows,
Champagne and canapes
A wedding breakfast
For sixty guests
It’s a Midsummer’s night dream!
Finger painting transforms little beings into
Naked nymphs and pixies
Who squeal with glee as they run through the sprinkler
Garden how many
gills of tears
pints of alcohol
have been spilt on your lawn?
How many
“I love you”
And stories of angst
have you heard?
