INTENTION & IMPACT IN MOTION: Movement & Communication Workshop

Picture
Date: 5th-6th March 2022

Location: Wootton Fitzpaine, West Dorset

  • The following statement stopped me in my tracks. It named something that I often feel is a blindspot in movement practice:

Understanding The Difference Between Intent and Impact.
Try to understand and acknowledge impact. Denying the impact of something said by focusing on intent is often more destructive than the initial interaction.
(East Bay Meditation Centre, Oakland, CA)

With a movement that I put in the space – perhaps it is not enough to say: ‘It left me OK’ and to wash my hands of the consequences – I need to take into account my own bias, the situation that I am acting into and to pay attention to shifts of atmosphere.

In movement it is complicated to become aware of one’s own impact on an ever shifting situation - body ‘speaking’ is multi layered and less formulated than the spoken word, but no less impactful. If I come to know my patterns of movement, my behaviour, I can begin to identify my contribution to the situation. My intention, sometimes only half perceived or acknowledged, is connected to the impact that I have on the atmosphere around me.

This workshop begins from the premise that it is impossible to not communicate – we exist within a field of embodied communication that already is.  Developing the capacity to attune to myself in the non-verbal realms, to listen to what is happening around me through the moving body and to read the situation that I am acting into are useful skills as we seek to build courage, understanding and empathy in a beleaguered world.

“I would describe Move into Life as an immersion in movement which awakens patterns of behaviour but also reveals new ways of being in the world through contact with myself, others and the environment.”

  • Moving with an awareness of your joints and body structure.
  • Movement awareness of the place surrounding you – point/line /angle
  • Movement awareness of others through the space
  • Recognising atmosphere.
  • Arriving…
  • Recognising the point of contact with another and your patterns in that moment.
  • Choice/compulsion
