Journey - Valley to Rock to Sea
(Environmental Movement)

Picture
Journey: The Environmental Lens
Dates: 14th - 16th June, 2014
Location: Isle of Purbeck, West Dorset

How can we rediscover a sense of being part of the world we live in - rather than seeing the world as just ‘being there for us’?

Can you perceive your movement as part of the shifting patterns of movement in nature?  By a stream, on a grassy clifftop or on broad, flat rocks by the sea, feel your elemental, embodied self responding to the land. All is in motion. How does your movement vocabulary change when you go from a room to the ledges, to the rocks or to the sea? - when the sky becomes your ceiling and the horizon becomes your boundary wall?

Each day you will make the same journey across the hillside, down through the valley and its meadows, along the cliff and down to the rocky seashore. Find how the journey changes from day to day and learn how your mood responds to the weather and the other participants.

Through simple activities and movement scores and you will be guided to explore and become aware of:
  • a sense of scale or proportion in motion
  • cycles of activity and receptivity
  • staying and going; going within staying and staying within going
  • the relationship between movement and seeing
  • point, line, and angle and ecological perception
  • moving from touch, moving from hearing/listening and sounds
  • your rhythms in movement in the environment
  • balance and off-balance: equal value

Themes in this workshop will include:
  • body memory
  • awareness of the wider constellation
  • boundaries and context
  • exploring the difference between territory and habitat
  • moving from a sense of longing to a sense of belonging.

You don’t need (and won’t be expected to have) any experience of Move into Life or other movement work.

Cost: £170 for the 3 days (excluding accommodation - see map below for local B&Bs and campsites.) Save £15 if you book and send your deposit before the early-bird closing date.

"Moving in nature seems to awaken my senses in a way I rarely experience indoors. My sense of sight, touch, smell, taste and hearing are involved. As are my body sensations and movement and my emotions and thoughts. All are congruous, alive, open and responsive to the moment by moment changes that are occurring in me and in the environment. I feel a deep sense of inter-being with my environment."
