Movement and Communication:
Patterns and Pathways

Picture
The Communication Lens
Date: 24th - 27th February 2014
Location: University of Limerick

  • How much? How little?
  • When?
  • To go or to stay?
  • To speak or to listen?
  • To give or to take?
  • To be in the middle, to be on the outside or to be among?
  • To belong or to long for?

Inevitably our attitudes to one another are always present in the way we move. And we can play with those attitudes by moving differently, by embodying different expressions of life in our dance or in our movement.

Over this weekend, we will explore, through movement, the communication that happens between us in the changing moment, identifying, accepting and disrupting habits as a way of opening up new choices and opening up a new movement vocabulary.

Energy, dynamics and relationships are largely invisible processes but the fact that they are invisible does not negate their existence. The work is to make those invisible communication dynamics visible through movement, without losing an awareness of context, so that we can shine a light on our motives, intentions and tendencies in communication with others.

By following physical sensations in movement , you will be guided to explore and become aware of:
  • How you embody communication - the shape, flow, structure, habits and patterns of your movement when you are with others.
  • Possible variations -how you could embody it differently.
  • Presence in the changing being and in the changing situation.
  • Ways in which you can 'read' group situations through movement.
  • a kinaesthetic awareness of the group dynamics.
  • How you respond to others and how they respond to you.
  • Flexibility and adaptation to the moment.
  • Amplification.
  • How you approach and leave, engage with or avoid other people.

“I would describe Move into Life as an immersion in movement which awakens patterns of behaviour but also reveals new ways of being in the world through contact with myself, others and the environment.”
